Obituary

Alice "Sue" Marie Oxford (Riedinger) passed away peacefully on the morning of Sunday, May 23, 2021 at her home in Newman Lake, WA.   She was 90 years old, just two months shy of her 91 st birthday.

Sue was born on July 23, 1930 in Lewiston, ID.  She was the first of 11 children born to Carl Joseph and Edna Belva (Powers) Riedinger.  They lived in Peola, WA where Sue and her brother Carl "Jim" would ride their horses to attend school in a one room school house.  The family later moved to Chewelah, WA and Sue attended high school in Valley, WA where she was elected Homecoming Queen.

After graduation, Sue moved to Colfax and while waiting tables at a restaurant she met and was swept off her feet by Charles David Oxford.  They got married on her 19th birthday, July 23, 1949 and had eight children together, raising them in Spokane, WA.  In 1968, Sue started working for Safeway as a checker and worked there until she retired in the mid 1990's.   Her sweet smile and loving personality endeared her to customers and co-workers alike.

Sue was a huge sports fan, specifically the Seattle Mariners during the reign of Ken Griffey Jr and Edgar Martinez.  She collected baseball cards and was able to attend a Mariner's game at the Kingdome before it was demolished.  Sue was also a proud "12", each season she would study the Seattle Seahawks team roster to memorize the player's numbers so she could recognize them out on the field.

Although Sue was sweet, loving and forgiving, she was also strong, stubborn and unapologetic about her beliefs.   She made time for the people in her life, she was the first one to greet you with a hug and a kiss and always looked happy to see you.  Sue was the rock of the family and the person everyone wanted to see and spend time with.  She is going to be greatly missed, and it will take the family a long time to feel any sense of peace about her passing.

Sue came from a very large family, and she built on that by having a large family.  The following list is going to be long, but please take the time to read it, because who she was and who she became was shaped, influenced and inspired by these people:

Sue was preceded in death by her parents Carl and Edna; former husband Charles; siblings: Carl, Donald and Donna (twins who passed shortly after birth), Carleen Kriebel, Robert, Nancy Perrine, Judy Rice and Willis.  Children: Therese Anne Winkler and Grandchildren: Suzanne Marie Winkler, Johnathan Reed Oxford and Shawn Michael McCoy.

Sue is survived by her sister Mary Hickman and brother John Riedinger.  Her children: David Lloyd (Susan), Linda Sue (Steve) Emerson, Carl George (Lylia Stone), Cathleen Dianne McCoy, Scott Edward (Tracie), Patricia Eileen and John Charles.

Grandchildren:  Paul Scott (Tessa Lee) Oxford and Daniel Chris (Heidi) Kaneff; Sarah Renee Emerson, Rachael Lynn (Derek Davis) Emerson and Ashley Marie (Gordon) Smith; Tisha (Steve) Robbins; Kimberly Anne Winkler, Stephanie Rene' Winkler and Zachary Oxford.

Great grandchildren:  Cooper Steven Oxford, Gavin Oxford, Noelle Oxford, Sydney Marie (Clayton) Kaneff Durheim, Garrison Michael Kaneff and Jacob Albert Kaneff; Shaylee Fields, Leia and Keira Lanier, Ryatt Davis, Addison Smith and Karli Smith; Evan Robbins; Shawn Macconkey and Dayton Macconkey; Amara Winkler-Coty and Adonis Winkler-Coty.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 12, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel at St Joseph's Catholic Cemetery located at 17825 E. Trent Ave, Spokane Valley, WA.  Internment will immediately follow the service.   A reception will be held at Sue's house in Newman Lake following the service.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Spokane for the exceptional care Sue received in the last few months in her life.  Memorial donations can be made in Sue's name to Hospice of Spokane, PO Box 2215, Spokane, WA 99210.
