February 18, 1942 – January 13, 2021
Bernice Bays of Spokane Valley, Washington passed away January 13 th , 2021 at the age of 78 peacefully in her residence after a fulfilling life well lived. Bernice was born February 18, 1942 in Devils Lake, North Dakota. She grew up in a large farming family. After high school she moved to Fargo to attend college where she met her husband Bill and married May 18, 1963 at St Joseph's Catholic Church in Devils Lake North Dakota. Bill's Air Force career lead them to live in many places around the country and Japan. Upon Bill's retirement from the Air Force in 1976 they settled with their 4 children in Spokane Valley, Washington and became active members of St Mary Catholic Church. After her children were grown, Bernice built her dream waterfront home in Priest River, Idaho. Here she spent her time gardening, quilting, enjoying the outdoors, and spoiling her grandchildren. She was active in both St Anthony's and St Catherine's churches. Life was never slow or un-exciting. Activities abounded at Grandmas River. Bernice leaves behind 4 children Stacie Bays, Mike Bays (Karen), Steve Bays, and Jeff Bays (Alijean) and 16 grandchildren. Bernice is survived by two brothers Raymond (Rosa) Hager, Portland, OR; Kenneth (Judy) Hager, Devils Lake, ND and two sisters Cecila Parkos, Crosslake, MN; and Maggie Evanson, Northwood, ND and numerous nieces and nephews. Bernice was preceded in death by her loving husband William Martin Bays Jr., parents John and Magdalena Hager, brothers Mike Hager, Jack Hager, and sisters Cecila Hager (infant), Mary Hager (infant), Elizabeth Jorgenson, Agatha Baker, and Irene Streifel. Bernice was compassionate, caring and loving. The generosity and warmth of her heart extended to the many friendships she cherished throughout her life.
