Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Carolyn Elaine Costigan. Carolyn was born in Memphis TN to Bob and Margaret McAlister on August 26, 1948. Bob had finished his time in the Navy and brought his wife and daughter back to Spokane where they would settle and have three more daughters, Denise Hamilton, Robin Reynolds (Steve), and Melinda Shortell. Carolyn graduated from Shadle Park High School in 1966 and that is where she met the great love of her life, John. They would go on to be married 55 years and have three children, Michele Durrance (Steve), Mark Costigan (Tina), and Elaine Costigan (Brian). While raising her children was her greatest joy, she had always wanted to be a nurse. She went to both Sacred Heart School of Nursing and Spokane Community College to realize her dream. Carolyn was a registered nurse at Deaconess Hospital for 32+ years, retiring in 2012. Carolyn loved music, traveling and to entertain. Sunday dinners were always decorated with a beautiful table scape and comfort food in the oven. We have so many memories filled with laughter and will never forget the family vacation to Maui. Carolyn was the best Nana to her grandchildren and great grandchildren and had a special relationship with each of them. She cherished the many calls and visits with grand-daughter Amy Brickweg (Chris) and the special time she spent with her great grandchildren Grady and Hadley. Carolyn and John were honored to host the wedding of grand-daughter Brittney to Nathan Zimprich in their back yard. She was so proud of the accomplishments and charisma of grand-daughter Ashley Monroe (Travis). She had a special bond with grandson's Michael and John Costigan. Mike has been an amazing help to her and such a kind soul with the best hugs around. Little John warmed her heart and was her sunshine. Carolyn was the pillar of our family and always made sure that everyone was taken care of. We will all miss her immensely but know she has found peace surrounded by her mother, father, and extended family/friends that preceded her death. The world will not be the same without her.
