Obituary

Cathy Piche Schafer passed away Saturday, June 25th, 2022 at Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane, Washington. She was surrounded by family and friends. Cathy was born December 31st, 1951 to Tom and Shirley Lovett in Boston, Massachusetts. She was the fourth of five children. She excelled in school with her studies, sports, music and extracurricular activities including cheerleading and class president. After graduating from high school in 1969, she spent the next few years in Boston. She attended nursing school for a short time, then moved to Spokane in the early 1970's. She came to Spokane to start a new journey and to spend time with her older brother Pat and their maternal grandparents. She had two children whom she adored, Dan and Janell. She met her husband Rich in 1990 at the Spokane Valley Bowling Alley. With their passion for bowling, they hit it off immediately and started a true romance. They were married September 21st, 1991. Cathy had a long career as an L&I administrator. She retired in the fall of 2014. She was then able to spend time doing her favorite hobbies: reading, scrapbooking, ceramics, shopping and girls' day out at the casino. Cathy truly lived life through simple pleasures such as chatting with friends and neighbors, thrift store shopping, road trips and enjoying meals with friends and family. Cathy was predeceased by her father Thomas Lovett, her mother Shirley Lovett, and her brother Pat Lovett. She is survived by her husband Rich, her children Dan (Tara), Janell (Caleb), her three grandchildren, Patrick, Joe, and Kayla, her aunt Anna, her brothers Timmy and Michael, and sister Alyce, all of Boston. Cathy has extended family throughout the nation. Cathy made many good friends throughout her life– especially the Boston gals, Deanie, Ann Marie, and Mary Ellen. Her friendships, near and far, from a few years in or with 50 plus decades, moved mountains. They were her heart and her happiness. Cathy was a very kind and generous person. She was incredibly giving and always showing her love, be it a tangible gift or with her kindness and time. She always lit up a room, especially with her Boston accent. She had a great sense of humor, loved shopping, and of course, Gonzaga basketball. She will be missed by all.  Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, July 16th, 2022 at 11am at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Otis Orchards. Burial will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery on Trent.
