David Elliott
"Pat" Taggart
September 24, 1947 – January 30, 2026
David Elliott "Pat" Taggart passed away peacefully on January 30, 2026, at Holy Family Hospital due to complications from Parkinson's and Dementia. He was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed by his family, friends, students, and the many lives he touched throughout the Spokane region.
A longtime resident of Spokane, David devoted more than 30 years to teaching children and teenagers with emotional and intellectual challenges. His career was marked by compassion, patience, and an unwavering belief in the potential of every child. In addition to his work in the classroom, he served as a Special Olympics coach, football coach, track coach and driver's education teacher, roles in which he became a trusted mentor and role model to countless young people.
He earned his Master's degree from the University of Edinburgh in 1987, accomplishing in one year what many had told him could not be done.
In recognition of his extraordinary dedication and impact, David was honored with the National Special Olympics Coach of the Year Award in 1984 — an achievement that reflected both his skill and his heart for the students he coached.
Above all, David was a devoted family man. Known as "Pat" to those closest to him, he was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and uncle. He is survived by his loving wife, Carol; his daughters, Sherine (Mike) Walker and Jennifer (Justin) Taggart; four grandchildren, Eric, Shaylene, Dylan and Loren; five great-grandchildren; sisters Barb (Pat) Lockard and Kathy McKee, brothers Mike (Judith) Taggart and Kenzie (Connie) Taggart, and nieces, and nephews who cherished him dearly.
Those who knew David will remember him not only for his accomplishments, but for his kindness and generosity of spirit. He was simply put- a good man — someone who would do anything for any kid he met, always ready with encouragement, understanding, and a helping hand.
David Elliott "Pat" Taggart leaves behind a legacy of service, love, and compassion that will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
The funeral and memorial service is March 7, 2026, at 1pm, at the Holy Cross Cemetery Chapel. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the National Council on Severe Autism.
