Dennis George Johnston, age 86, was born to William H & Yvonne Johnston Dec 7, 1938, in Graceville, Minnesota. The family moved to Spokane in 1942. Denny had 7 siblings.
He attended St Patrick's Catholic school & church, Gonzaga Prep, and ran for Notre Dame on a track & cross country scholarship. Denny taught HS English & foreign languages for 15 years in South Bend, IN. He coached HS track, cross country, and basketball, was a Basketball referee, and enjoyed competing in tennis every weekday for much of his adult life in Spokane. He ran Bloomsday many years, was an avid Gonzaga U fan, and was an active member of the Spokane Limerick Society. Denny retired from Wonder Bread Bakery and continued to enjoy monthly gatherings with his St Patrick's and Wonder Bread people for many years. He also loved extended family gatherings.
Denny is survived by his wife of 60 years, Anna, their 4 children: Kevin (Karen) of Colfax, WA, Anna Whipple (Andrew) of Harrison, ID, Dennis A. of Spokane, Eric (Siscily) of Seattle, WA, his grandchildren Kurtis, Karli Anna, Ben, Jesse, Hunter, and 4 great grandchildren; in-laws Rudy & Trudy Muessig, and his siblings Dave (Diana), Gordon, Bill, and Lori (Michael), and sisters-in-law Liz, Ronda, and Hazel. Denny had 45 nieces and nephews. Denny was preceded in death by his brothers Jim, Jerry, and Bob.
Mass will be March 22nd at 10am at St Patrick's Catholic Church, followed by a reception at St Francis Assisi parish hall at 11:30am. Donations can be made to Gonzaga Prep or Catholic charities.
