Our gentle, loving, empathetic son, Derick John Syhlman was set free October 14, 2025. He was taken away too soon by the deadly disease of addiction. But the disease did not define him-Derick was a scholar, artist, baker, world traveler, best friend, animal lover and family man. Derick was born on May 23, 1991, in Spokane, WA.

He attended Assumption Parish School and Gonzaga Prep, graduated from EWU and just received his master's degree in Phytobacteriology from University of Hawaii. He was on the path toward his dream career-helping to protect the environment. To know Derick was to understand the definition of a true friend!

He had a gift for making others feel valued and loved. He is survived by his parents Patty and Brian, sisters Marisa (Teague), and Claire, his niece Elora, and his loving extended family of aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, and close friends. We will forever miss you Derick and never forget you!

A celebration of life was held on Saturday, November 29, 2025 at the Montvale Event Center, 1019 W. Riverside Ave., Spokane, WA 99201. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your local Humane Society in Derick's memory.
