Donald Joseph
Hoerner
March 18, 1935 – October 19, 2025
Donald Joseph Hoerner passed away on October 19, 2025, at the age of 90, at Amani House, in Spokane Valley, Washington with his daughter Cindie by his side.
Don was born in Richardton, North Dakota, on March 18, 1935, to Rochus and Emelia (Berger) Hoerner. The family moved to Spokane in November 1936, joining relatives who were already beginning to settle there. Over time, the Hoerner parents and many of the siblings made
Spokane their home, creating the family roots that he remembered fondly.
Donald, along with two older sisters and two older brothers and two younger sisters were raised in Morgan Acres alongside cousins, aunts and uncles. He attended school at St. Patrick's School, Gonzaga Prep and Roger's High School. On the second Sunday of June 1950, a young man, of age 15 visited Donna at her parent's corner grocery store, Bruce's Groceries. That handsome young man, Donald, was smitten with
this young girl of 14, and the rest was history. Mom and Dad were married on May 13, 1954, and to this union, four daughters were born.
Don began his career in the lumber and building-supply industry, spending many years as co-owner at North Side Building Supply and North Side Builders remodeling many, many houses throughout Spokane.
Don cherished his time at their log cabin in Yaak, Montana where many summer vacations were enjoyed next to the river. Don and Donna were also foster parents to several young children. Don carried a strong and steady love for his daughters and grandchildren, a love expressed not
in grand speeches but in presence, reliability and ice cream.
Don was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Donna and granddaughter Brittney, parents, Roy and Amelia Hoerner; his brothers Orion, Edward, and Roy, Jr..; and his sisters Evelyn Kimpel, Elaine Lordan, Amelia Patterson and Patricia Gaffney.
He is survived by his daughters — Cindie Hoerner (Jeff), Tammie Anderson, Nancie Lehrman (Wes) and Lisa Garry— along with his grandchildren Gabriel, Andrew, Sember, Whitney, Nathan, Courtney and Jordan; eleven great-grandchildren who will fondly remember him.
In the final chapter of his life, Don received compassionate care from those who tended to him. Even as dementia slowly took pieces of his memory, he kept his wit and gentle humor until the end — a testament to the spirit that defined him. The family is very thankful this difficult time was made a little lighter by the loving care he received from Mark, Eduine, Karolyn, Joyce, Paul and Kathy.
He will be interred at Holy Cross Cemetery in Spokane.
His legacy is found not only in the buildings he worked on, but in the steady love, quiet strength,
and enduring kindness he left in the hearts of those who knew him.
