Dorothy Shannon was comforted by family and friends in her last days of life at the Rockwood Ridge assisted living center. She died on May 5, 2022, at 102 years of age. Dorothy was born in Butte, Montana on February 11, 1920. She was born to Ruth and Walter LeSage. She had a brother Wallie LeSage who passed away in 2009. She grew up in Butte and attended Girls Central Catholic High School. She graduated and at 16 years old went on to St Theresa's Nursing School in Winona, Minnesota. She married Charles Shannon also from Butte, Montana. After living in Butte for about ten years they moved to Spokane, Washington where they raised their six children. The family business Shannon and Sun Construction remained in Butte so the family spent a lot of time back in Butte with work and visiting family and relatives.
Dorothy was a stay-at-home mom but volunteered for the Altar Society at St Augustine Church and the grade school. She also volunteered at Holy Names Academy, the girls high school in Spokane. She enjoyed playing bridge. She was a regular at the fitness center doing water aerobics in the pool. She was a wonderful cook. She took out the mix master every day. Homemade cookies, pies, and donuts were made almost every day along with wonderful meals of stews, casseroles, roasts, fresh fish, and chicken. The favorites were spritz cookies at Christmas time and her homemade chip dip. She was famous for her homemade cinnamon rolls, Butte pasties, and Margaritas. Dorothy was a great WSU Cougar fan where four of her six children went to college. She liked to travel and she spent many winters in Hawaii. She worked in a dental office for Cregh House and Jim Mengert later in her life for about 20 years. She enjoyed many summers at the lakes; especially Hayden Lake and Coeur D'Alene Lake
Family traditional parties on holidays, Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, oh yes, and Halloween were very special. Also, everyone's birthday party was celebrated with streamers, presents, and a special shrine of pictures honoring the birthday boy or girl. Her great-granddaughter Charlotte Dix shared the same birthday with Dorothy on February 11th. They were 90 years apart.
She expressed her long life was due to four things: "Believe in God, be positive, laugh a lot, and don't miss Happy Hour." Pat Dix her son-in-law spent many happy hours with her. He was her Scotch Buddy.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Chuck, her brother Wallie, and her mother and father. Dorothy is survived by her six children; Carol Walther, Chuck Shannon (Paddy), Suzanne Shannon, Kathleen Dix (Pat), Colleen Shannon, and Mary Shannon. Dorothy has 10 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
The family will hold a funeral on Saturday, June 18th, 2022 at 10 am at Sacred Heart Church 219 E. Rockwood Blvd. Spokane, WA 99202. Reception to follow. Rest in Peace Dorothy. We all know she is now comfortable and happy in heaven.
