Obituary

Edward "Hans" Kaio peacefully passed away Tuesday March 9, 2021 at the age of 53 in Spokane, Washington with his wife Christine by his side. Hans was born November 9, 1967 at Fairchild Air Force Base to Edward and Pauline Kaio. He had an idyllic childhood growing up in Spokane enjoying the many sports he played with his lifelong friends from Indian Trail Elementary.  Hans attended North Central High School graduating in 1986 with many wonderful friends who still enjoy and support each other to this day.  After many years of working in various fields, he finally found his calling graduating with a Hearing Instrument Specialist degree from SFCC.  He worked at Columbia Hearing Centers in Spokane and not only loved working with all his wonderful patients, but also his fellow teammates. Hans loved everyone. As his son Pierson so eloquently said, "Hansi is the kindest man; he is the type that always speaks to everyone with the same level of curiosity and intention. He brings insects (even mosquitoes) outside in a glass if they find their way in the house. He fills the biggest room with a Santa Claus-esque laugh." His smile lit up a room. His beloved daughter Kelsey noted "He was one of those rare and beautiful souls that you just couldn't help but want to be next to and draw from his light." His son Coleman was so thankful that "Mom had found her person" and he greatly admired how Hans took such great care of her. Hans loved spending quality time with his family, whether it be at Mariners games, traveling the world, camping, or just having a beer with them. He made every moment count. You couldn't meet a more avid sports fan, he especially loved his Seahawks and Mariners. Hans is survived by his wife Christine, daughter Kelsey (Luke) Machtolf, sons Pierson Villarrubia and Coleman Villarrubia, sisters Kapena Kaio and Roberta (Steve) Kaio-Maddox, nephews Aaron (Katie) Kaio, Konnar (Emalee) Kaio-Maddox, and niece Korina (Dane) Kaio-Maddox, and grandchildren Wyatt, Hannah, Joseph, Nathanael, and Royal. There will be a private celebration of Hans's life at a later date.

In lieu of flowers please send donations in Hans's name to River's Wish Animal Sanctuary: PO Box 18371, Spokane, Washington 99228.
