Obituary

Ed Cheyney, a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, husband, brother and friend, passed away on December 23, 2022 at Chaplaincy House in Kennewick, WA after a 2-year struggle with dementia.

Ed was born on October 4, 1939, the first of five children, to Lucille Zeimantz Cheyney, born on March 8, 1908 in Mondovi, WA, and Clarence Cheyney, born on April 23, 1900 in Cascade Locks, Oregon.

Ed was always willing to help family and friends in time of need even while working a heavy schedule, sometimes working a second job as an electronic organ and TV repairman to support a family in the early years. He worked in maintenance at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Spokane for two years after high school while living with his grandmother and helping her with chores. He was with the last graduating class at Spokane Trade School before it became Spokane Community College. His devotion to God and church and God-given talent was no doubt his entrance to gaining employment in 1961 at Hanford, beginning with GE as an instrument and control technician. He thanked God that he was not without work for even one day in his 44 1/2-year career; as one company faded out, he was immediately hired by the next, including Battelle, retiring in 2005 after 27 ½ years at Energy Northwest where he eventually became a foreman and procedure writer. He won awards because of his imaginative design of instruments.

His favorite pastime was photography. Having inherited an artistic nature that runs in the family, he also won awards and prizes for pictures he took, his favorite being landscapes. He and wife, Jean, traveled the world on cruises and the U.S. by car to places where he took thousands of pictures.

Ed is survived by wife, Jean Cheyney, children Joe (Kathleen) Cheyney, Stephanie (Tim Foster) Cheyney, Mike Cheyney, Tom (Xuan) Cheyney, Robert (Laurie) Cheyney, Allen (Jessica) Cheyney; sisters MaryAnn Kuther, Rita Moore, brothers Frank (Rose) Cheyney, and Robert (Shana) Cheyney; grandchildren Kevin (Challon) Cheyney, Casi Cheyney, Stephen (Rena) Cheyney, Benjamin Foster, Paula, and Beth, David (Jessica) Church, 10 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, and cousins and good friends George and Bev Alexander and Phil and Sue VanDoren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
