Elmer Bernard Niehenke, age 92, quietly passed away on Friday, April 7, 2023 at his home in Spokane, Washington with 3 members of his family and Horizon Hospice by his side.
Elmer was born January 26, 1931 to Frank and Bertha Niehenke in Colton Washington. Elmer is preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Barbara Niehenke. He was the 4 th of 7 children and is survived by 2 of his siblings, Emogene Weber of Colton, and Norbert Niehenke of Moscow, Idaho. In addition he survived by his 4 children, Kevin, Kim, Karen and Kenneth, 9 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren.
Elmer was raised in Colton Washington and graduated from Colton High School. He was drafted into the army in 1952 and served in Panama for 2 years. During his service he received the National Defense Service Medal. Upon leaving the army, he attended trade school in Portland Oregon to become a heavy equipment mechanic, which he acceled at until retirement. It was during his time in Portland in which he met his later to be wife,Barbara, who was studying radiology technology at the same time. They married in 1957 and moved to Spokane in 1958 where they lived at the same residence until their deaths. Elmer was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and catholic. He will be deeply missed by all.
