Gary R
Joyce
February 1, 1941 – November 19, 2023
Gary Rolland Joyce, 82, passed away at his home in Spokane, Washington on November 19, 2023.
Gary was born on February 1, 1941, in Carthage, Missouri to Archibald and Myrtle Joyce, the second of three sons. He attended Radium Elementary School, then graduated from Carthage High School in 1959. He also attended Joplin Junior College, Missouri Southern State College, and Kansas State University (Milling Engineering).
Gary worked in the milling industry for 43 years, starting at Morrow Mills in Carthage then joining Nabisco in 1961. With Nabisco, he moved his family to Toledo, Ohio, and then to Cheney, Washington to run the mills there. In 1984, the Cheney mill was purchased by Archer Daniels Midland, and Gary finished out his career there as Plant Manager, retiring in 2002.
As a youngster, his passion was baseball, followed by football, hunting, and fishing. In his later years, he took up traditional archery and spent many years enjoying archery competitions, shooting at the Evergreen Archery Club, and hunting elk and deer in the Blue Mountains. He was an avid angler and enjoyed fishing at the many lakes around Cheney, including Williams Lake where he owned a cabin at Bunker's Resort. But by far his greatest passion was his Christian faith.
Gary led a life of service and was well-loved by his family, friends, neighbors, and parish. He stepped in to help any time he saw something needing attention or someone needing assistance, but he took special pride in his duties as St. Peter's sacristan, where he attended morning mass daily.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Patrecia Joyce, his stepson, Sean Logon, older brother Ronald Joyce, and younger brother Edwin Joyce.
Gary is survived by his daughter, Debra Weller and her husband, Chris, of Des Moines, Washington, and his granddaughter, Naomi Logon, of Spokane, Washington. Gary is also survived by his former wife, Karen Joyce.
