Obituary

Helen Bernice Reichert (nee Wallace) of Spokane, Washington, passed away suddenly Wednesday August 25, 2021 at the age of 88.  Her son Bill and his wife Debbie were at her side.

Helen was born in Mott North Dakota on June 16, 1933, to Frank and Mary Wallace. The second of four children, Helen graduated from Mott High School in 1951.  After graduation she began work with the US Army Corps of Engineers, where she met and soon after married Frank, her husband of 65 years.  They were wed on September 1, 1955 and their marriage brought four children into the world.

As her children became more independent Helen returned to work, first as an office administrator at St Joseph Catholic Church before rejoining the Corps of Engineers on the Libby Montana dam project.  When Frank was transferred to North Central Washington, Helen continued her employment with the Corps, this time working with Frank as a procurement coordinator on the Chief Joseph Dam project.  After Frank retired, they moved to Spokane where she continued working for the Corps at Fairchild AFB until her retirement in 1990.

A devout Catholic, Helen was active in church activities.  A member of the Alter Society at every parish where Frank's job took them, she volunteered as Catechism teacher, St. Vincent DePaul donation coordinator, and funeral hospitality director.  She was a Eucharistic Minister and also headed several church cleaning teams.  For many years, Helen volunteered in the church office, providing continuity during staffing turnover and vacations.

Helen's life was a testament to service.  She volunteered as a Cub Scout den mother, little league baseball coach, elementary school room mother, and high school chaperone for field trips, music competitions, and sporting events. She was also an organizer for the local county Junior Fair as well as a fundraiser for the Red Cross, American Heart Association, and Cancer Society.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Mary, her sisters Fern (Wylie) and Alita (Miller), brother Jimmy and husband Frank.  She is survived by her sister Jane (Rosen,) children William (Debbie), Carol (Dana), Thomas (Shannon), and Robert, and grandchildren Hana, Chris (Audrey), and Nolan.

Vigil with rosary will be held at Assumption Parish, 3564 W. Indian Trail Road, Tuesday, 31 August, at 6:00 pm.  Funeral mass, also at Assumption, will be celebrated Wednesday, 1 September, at 11:00 am.  Inurnment at Holy Cross cemetery is Thursday, 2 September, at 2:00 pm.
