Obituary

James Christopher Sloane, age 79, passed away peacefully in the care of Hospice House of Spokane on July 21, 2021 after suffering declining health for the last few years. He is survived by his high school sweetheart and lifelong love, Judi, and by his stepchildren, Kristen Smalley of Raleigh, NC, Geoff (Jennifer) Brown of Santa Barbara, CA, Paul (Pam) Warner of Pullman, WA, and Ryan (Kate) Warner of Spokane, WA, as well as by his beloved grandchildren, Jack and Mia. Jim was born in Seattle on November 27, 1941, graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1959, University of Washington in 1964 and Gonzaga University School of Law in 1967.

Jim stayed in Spokane after law school and went on to have an illustrious career as the City Attorney of Spokane and with Paine Hamblen after he retired from the city. He loved his adopted hometown and was proud of the many achievements that he and his team brought to fruition for Spokane and its residents, including River Park Square, the Waste to Energy plant, and many others. With his calm, thoughtful, and unassuming demeanor, it gave our family many laughs to tease him when the Spokesman-Review referred to him as "the silent power broker of Spokane" in the midst of one of his key projects in the 1990's.

Jim was an avid Washington Huskies and Gonzaga Bulldogs fan, as well as a WSU Cougars fan -- unless it was Apple Cup time when all of his very enthusiastic cheering was for his Huskies to bring home the Cup! But nearest and dearest to his heart was racing Formula Fords, which he did for over 50 years. Racing also brought a special group of friends to Jim and Judi's lives. His friends all knew that key to his race day prep was a McDonald's run - along with the instruction to not tell Judi who valiantly tried to keep his diet on the straight and narrow. He also brought his love of racing to benefit a cause close to Jim and Judi's heart, Parkinson's research and services, with a fundraiser race a few years ago.

Perhaps the most enduring memory that many of us will have of Jim was his immense love for Judi. They dated in high school after meeting in the aisle of an Albertson's where he was a bag boy and then found each other again years later. Theirs was a relationship that we all wish to emulate – deeply devoted, loving, and caring for each other every day of their lives together.
