Jeanne Sutton
Schaub
October 9, 1954 – July 14, 2024
Jeanne Sutton Schaub was born October 9, 1954, in Caldwell, ID, near her parents' farm in Parma, ID. After a courageous fight against cancer, Jeanne died peacefully at home on July 14, 2024.
Jeanne had a big laugh, a mischievous sense of humor, and a love of surprises. She broke rules, bucked convention, and ignored no trespassing signs. She adored animals, which included at various times horses, cattle, chickens, goats, cats, and two beloved dogs: Gracie and Joon. The only animals that vexed her were ground squirrels and flickers, which she dispatched with a hunting rifle. She was an outstanding fly fisher, able to out-fish her companions with ease and nonchalance, and a hard-working land manager of the 80-acre property in Spokane, WA, that she and her husband, Steve, bought when they married and united their families in 1997.
After graduating from Parma High School in 1972, Jeanne pursued a degree in education at University of Idaho and joined the Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority. Jeanne taught fourth grade for twenty years at Ramsey Elementary in Coeur d'Alene school district, where she developed a love of teaching that remained with her to the end. She was never short on advice or opinions, which she lavished on her family whether they asked for it or not. She had exquisite taste in shoes, handbags, and clothing and a great sense of style that balanced elegance and simplicity. She learned to throw pottery later in life, and had a good eye for color, shape, and texture. She never met a kitchen gadget or a tough recipe she didn't want to try.
Jeanne loved to travel. She gamely biked along canals, battled seasickness on boats, and snorkeled in tropical waters. Particularly memorable was a trip to East Africa in 2013 where Jeanne photographed lions and sat face-to-face with mountain gorillas. One of her favorite destinations was the Iliamna River Lodge in Alaska, which she and her husband Steve began visiting in 2017, to the great consternation of the local rainbow trout, Arctic char, and salmon populations.
Jeanne is survived by her husband, J. Stephen Schaub; children Lindsay Hamilton-Scott (Colin) and Lauren Hamilton; brothers David Sutton of Los Angeles, CA, and Jeff Sutton (Cheryl) of Parma, ID. She was a loving aunt to her two nieces Brooke Hansen (Bodie) and Jennifer Sutton and grandmother to six step-grandchildren, whom she indulged with loud, plastic toys, recreational equipment, and the kind of shoes their parents would never buy them. She is preceded in death by her father, Hugh Sutton, stepfather, Pete Edgar, and mother, Melba Sutton Edgar.
Jeanne will be celebrated at a small, private ceremony, both at home and in Parma, ID. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that remembrances be made in her honor at the YWCA Spokane Supportive Services or Hospice of Spokane.
