Obituary

Jerome Haupt was born on May 30, 1938 in Spokane, Washington. He passed away May 9, 2020 in Spokane. He was raised in Spokane, going to St. Patrick ' s elementary school and John Rogers high school. 1n 1960 he graduated summa cum laude from Gonzaga University with a degree in Education. He married his college sweetheart, ReNell Jenkins a few weeks after graduation. Two days after they married, Jerry entered the U.S. Army.

Jerry and ReNell fell in love with military life and ended up serving for 30 years on active duty around the world. Jerry and his family served a total of IO years in Germany where he was a commander of an armored cavalry troop and a tank battalion commander; and later in Korea as a brigade commander.

Colonel Haupt's tours in combat were served in Vietnam. As an armored cavalry troop commander he was awarded the silver star, two bronze stars, a purple heart and the air medal. He also received two awards of the cross of gallantry from the Army of the Republic of Vietnam.

Over his military years, Jerry was active in Catholic parish life, serving on several parish councils and as president of a pastoral council. Most recently, he taught RCIA for eight years, a parish program to instruct those interested in becoming Catholic. He also served his community as a board member and president of the Spokane Valley Rotary. He was honored as a "Paul Harris Fellow," Rotary International's highest honor for "Service Above Self."

At 7 pm on November 30th, 2013, Jerry fell in love with Patricia Luckey when, over dinner at the Steam Plant Grill in Spokane, she said "I just love the Church. "From that moment  Patricia  became the love of the rest of his life. Their first date, that night, lasted four hours at the end of which they shared their first kiss. Jerry and Patricia were engaged five weeks later and married on her birthday, September 20th, 2014.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Lambert and Ivernia (Albo) Haupt; his wife of 42 years, ReNell (Jenkins) Haupt; and his brother Tom.

He is survived by his wife of seven years, Patricia Haupt; his three children, Paul Haupt, David Haupt,  and  Jennifer (Haupt) Haisley; seven grandchildren, Hannah Haupt, Luke Haupt, Joshua  Haupt, Kaitlyn  Haupt,  Courtney Haupt , and Megan Haisley and Anthony  Haisley,  and  his three great-grandsons Dominic Wilson, Sage Haupt, and Adonis Smith. He is also survived by Patricia's three children Steven Webber (Anna), Jeanne Bakker (Mark), and Royden Kinsey Luckey and six grandchildren, Heather Boyd, Kelsey Tate, Ashley and Andrea Webber, and Alex and Andrew Faust. Jerry  is survived as well by his sister Cathy (Haupt) Doerr and her husband, Mark, his brother Richard Haupt and his  wife Amy , and  his three nieces -    "The Doerr Girls" -            Elizabeth (and Cory), Emily (and Kyle), and Abigail, one grand nephew Finch Doerr and one grand niece Mae Kirkendahl.

Due to Covid restrictions at the time of his passing, he was laid to rest at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Spokane. Now, Vigil Rosary services will be Friday, May 28, 2021 at 6pm at Sacred Heart Parish, 219 E. Rockwood Blvd., Spokane. Memorial Mass will be celebrated Saturday, May 29, 2021 at 11am also at Sacred Heart Parish. Attendees please RSVP online at www.shparishspokane.org or by calling 509-747-5810.
