Obituary

Joseph "Joey" Frank Schlaht

Joseph "Joey" Frank Schlaht passed away peacefully at home on June 29, 2026, with his beloved cousin and lifelong best friend, Bruce Hoerner, by his side. He was 77 years old.

Joey was born on May 1, 1949, in Mandan, North Dakota. As a young child, he moved with his family to Spokane, Washington, where he spent the rest of his life. Spokane was his home, and the community and routines he built there brought him great comfort and happiness.

Joey found joy in life's everyday pleasures. He was an enthusiastic sports fan who especially loved attending Spokane Indians baseball games and Gonzaga basketball games. Every spring, he eagerly anticipated the excitement of March Madness. He was also an accomplished bowler and enjoyed working at a local bowling alley, where he shared his love of the game with others.

For many decades, Joey faithfully attended services at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, where he found community, comfort, and a sense of belonging. He also loved dining out, taking long walks, and spending time with the people who meant the most to him.

Joey had a playful spirit and a wonderful sense of humor that brought smiles to those around him. When his nieces and nephew were young—and later with his grandnieces and grandnephews—he delighted in spending time with them, happily playing games like Old Maid and Go Fish, or making them laugh with a game of "This Little Piggy." His gentle teasing and the ability to enjoy the moment created memories his family will always treasure.

Joey lived with intellectual disabilities, but he met life with kindness, consistency, and a genuine appreciation for everyday moments. His life may have been quiet, but it was rich with familiar faces, cherished traditions, and enduring relationships. Those who knew him will remember his gentle spirit, his loyalty, his playful nature, his infectious sense of humor, and the happiness he found in life's simple things.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ermaleen and Roland Schlaht, and his niece, Crystal Crozier.

Joey is survived by his sister, Dorothy Presnell; his nephew, Michael Presnell; his niece, Mary Presnell; nine grandnieces and grandnephews; and his dear cousin and best friend, Bruce Hoerner, whose steadfast friendship was a source of love and companionship throughout Joey's life.

Joey's family is grateful for all who shared in his life and helped make his journey a meaningful one. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
