Kathleen "Kathy"
J Votava
April 15, 1951 – October 13, 2023
Kathy was born April 15, 1951 in Laramie, Wyoming and passed away October 13, 2023 in Spokane after a 20 month battle with cancer at the young age of 72. She is survived by her husband of 51 years Dan, golden retriever fur baby Kaylee, brother Paul, and his wife Carolyn of San Jose, California, niece Kristina of San Francisco, California, and nephew Kenneth of Morgan Hill, California.
Kathy grew up in Spokane attending Glover and Shadle Park H.S. before graduating from EWSC. She got a job for a downtown law firm, but being a people person she wasn't happy being cooped up in an office. She then found a job in production at Value Village and retired after 26 ½ years there. She liked the people and was happy to get paid to go to a garage sale every day.
Kathy and Dan grew up 2 blocks from each other. They met at the local vacant lot baseball game in their pre-teen years. Their first date was on Dan's 14th birthday. Their relationship grew into a bond of love and respect few people are lucky enough to achieve. They were married August 5, 1972. Both Kathy and Dan loved camping, fishing, huge campfires and traveling to rivers, lakes, and the mountains. During their working years Kathy would get home from work and Dan would have the truck-camper, boat or jeep hooked up and ready to go somewhere for the weekend.
After retirement, they were home from November to February. They bought a 5th wheel trailer and would leave Spokane late February, spend March in Needles, California on the Colorado River, then to Morro Bay, California and spend April working up the California coast thru the Bay area and Redwoods. Then spend May in Oregon at Bandon, New Port, and Seaside. They would then pick a state to spend the summer in. One year Montana, then Colorado, then Oregon, etc., then back home for the snow.
For their 50th anniversary, they did a 10 day cruise up the coast of Maine from Boston to Bar Harbor, back to Newport, RI and Martha's Vineyard. Then in September two weeks in Troy, Montana for 2 guided fly fishing float trips on the Kootenai River. Then in October, two weeks on the Oregon Coast at Cape Lookout. It's not an anniversary day… it's an anniversary year.
Kathy was the kind of person everyone like to be around. She made you happy just having her there. She loved Jimmy Buffet and said we were living the mountain version of his songs. Then there was her cooking. We couldn't go out because her meals were better than any restaurant.
Here's to a life well lived. Full of good times and fond memories. Her passing has left a void nothing can fill. She used to say she was my little mountain girl. I was always so proud of her, my best friend, my quality of life. I love you Kathy, and can't wait to be reunited with you and all our puppies on the other side of the rainbow bridge.
As per Kathy's request, no service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Kathy's name to Scraps of Spokane. Special thanks to Hospice of Spokane for all their help.
