Kevin B
Masteller
June 7, 1953 – February 8, 2023
Kevin Masteller's focus in life was to be a good husband, father, son, friend and Christian – living a purpose-driven life and building deep relationships too numerous to count.
Kevin was born June 7, 1953, in Spokane and he peacefully went to heaven from his wife Sheila's arms on February 8, 2023 after many years of declining health. Despite enduring intense physical pain for decades, Kevin remained active in giving to others.
He was a life-long Spokane resident and a 1971 graduate of Gonzaga Prep where he excelled in football and track and was a strong student.
The core of Kevin's life was his family. Kevin said it was love at first sight in 1970 when he saw Sheila at a high school dance. They married on August 9, 1974, and his love never wavered. He unfailingly supported her in all things, including her career -- caring for their son Eric during the summers when he was 2, 3 and 4 so Sheila could attend grad school in Portland.
Kevin took great joy in coaching and mentoring. He coached his son Eric's youth soccer team to the state championship, Assumption elementary school football teams to championships and helped coach football at Gonzaga Prep for two years. Many of his former players became life-long friends and spoke of the life lessons he taught them. He also started/coached a chess club at Shaw Middle School.
He lived the word of the Gospel to help others. He was a Eucharistic minister to homebound parishioners, lector of scripture at Mass, volunteer homework mentor in the juvenile detention center and a volunteer visitor with Hospice of Spokane.
Kevin founded and grew Kar-Brite Hand Wash from 1984 to 2006, mentoring his son Eric to manage two locations and giving many their first job or a new chance at employment.
Kevin was a gifted artist. His work invited the viewer into a personal experience that reflected his talent, his deep spiritual journey and his uncompromising worldview encapsulating the layers of the "Self" that make up each and every one of us.
Survived by his beloved wife Sheila, his son and pride of his life Eric Kevin, granddaughter Enthy Masteller, mother Elaine Sullivan, brothers Craig (Gisele) and Ron (Kristy), Sheila's brothers and sisters and spouses, numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in support of Kevin's commitments to serving others can be made to Shaw Middle School, After School Programs for Students, 4106 N Cook St, 99207 or Catholic Charities of Eastern Washington, P.O. Box 2253, Spokane 99210-2253
