Laura Jean
Oiland
January 15, 1958 – February 13, 2022
Laura Jean Therese Michael Lourdes Oiland was born January 15,1958, in Abilene, TX. She was one of six children, and was one of a set of triplets. Being from an Air Force family, she grew up all over the U.S. Before graduating from high school in Boulder City, NV, she single-handedly started a local candy striper program for aspiring nurses. After high school, her family settled in Eastern Washington, where she met Kevin (Skip) Oiland while square dancing, whom she married and with whom she had one son, Kevin, Jr., in 1981.
She was an RN and started her career in the NICU at Sacred Heart. She later went to work for the Inland Northwest Blood Center, where she became the director of the bone marrow donor program. This took her all over the world, bringing life-saving marrow to recipients. She later went to work for St. Luke's Rehabilitation, and finally for Molina Healthcare.
She loved to travel the world, particularly on pilgrimages, especially with her son and loved ones. More than seeing the world, however, she preferred to spend her time with the people she loved.
She opened her home to all of her family. In recent years, in addition to her friendship with Skip, she also very much enjoyed the company and friendship of her brother Jim. She had a particular affection for her niece Jen, for whom she was a second mother and whom she loved greatly. She was adopted into the family of her dear friends, the Buck family, who all loved her deeply and whose children became her own grandchildren. Her greatest joy in this world, however, was her son, Fr. Kevin Oiland, to whom she was so devoted. She was enormously proud of and grateful for him, and loved to tell everyone at every opportunity! She treasured every moment with him!
More than anyone and everything, she loved God. She was very devout and had a very active prayer life. She spent many years discerning a call to become a member of the third order of religious life. This eventually led her to becoming a lay member of the Dominican Order (for which she has always had special love, particularly due to her love for learning and deepening her study of the Catholic Faith). It was then that she received the religious name "Michael Lourdes".
Laura spent the last several years learning to sew Mass vestments with her dear friend Maria, so that she could make something beautiful for God, and her son. Of all her hobbies, this one in particular brought her the most joy.
Joy was a special gift she had, which was reflected in her face and which she radiated and spread to all she came in contact with. She was kind, generous and sweet. She gave cheerfully and loved with her whole being, and was enormously loved in return.
Laura went to her reward Feb. 13, 2022. She is survived by her beloved son, Fr. Kevin Oiland; brother Jim Watson; sister Therese Saucier; stepmother Carol Watson; nieces and nephews, including her surrogate daughter Jen Smith, Zach Friesen, Tiara Capart; adopted grandchildren Faith, Hannah, Peter, Gregory, Anthony, Catherine, Monica and James, with their parents Tom and Maria. Laura was a lifelong and devout Catholic.
