Mary Lou
Boisen
October 12, 1932 – August 21, 2022
On August 21 st , Mary Boisen, 89, joined our heavenly Father after a lengthy battle with dementia. Her husband and love of her life, Don, was by her side, as he had been for the past 69 years.
Mary was born in Spokane to Arthur and Bernice Schalkau, their second daughter. She grew up on 17 th and graduated from Lewis and Clark High School. In 1953, she married Don Boisen, her high school sweetheart, at the Sacred Heart parish in Spokane. She and Don resided in Spokane, and they spent their summers at Diamond Lake, her favorite place. In 2000, they retired there.
She was a homemaker extraordinaire. Well known for her baking, especially pies and cinnamon rolls, Mary later sold her baked goods at the Lakeside Resort. She loved all holidays; she decorated the house and cut out sugar cookies for every season. Gardening was another one of her pastimes. She also loved to sew: tiny Barbie clothes, prom dresses, and her grandchildren's baptism outfits. The Boisen children never had store-bought Halloween costumes.
Most of all, she loved Diamond Lake. During the summer, she spent time golfing, going on walks, and swimming, often accompanied by her dog, Huckleberry. In the winter she skied and ice-skated. Regardless of the season, she loved to play cards with friends; Pinochle and Tripoley were her favorites. She also was a competitive Scrabble player.
Generous with her time and talents, she supported many organizations surrounding her family, church, and school. She was a campfire leader from Bluebirds on up, active in the Our Lady of Fatima Concern group, and was the room mother for all her children's classrooms. Mary was also active in the Altar Society and Sisters of Providence. She was always willing to lend a hand along with a smile. If you were lucky, she shared her baked goods as well.
Mary loved to entertain and made everyone feel welcome with her charm and wit. She adored Don and was a loving daughter, mother, grandmother, and friend.
She is survived by her husband, Don; daughters Annie (Mike) Wineman of Auburn WA; Jane (Phillip) Joseph of Harrison, ID; and Mary Ellen Meadows of Port Townsend, WA; grandchildren Valerie Boisen; Sara (Jake) Halvorson and Kristi Wineman; Amira (John), Rachael, Alex, Ava, and Elise Joseph; Emma, Gwen, and Owen Meadows; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her sister June and her son Tom (02/08/2022).
