Obituary

Matthew James Seiler was born in Highland Park, Illinois in 1972 to Mary Louise and Harold Seiler. The second born of six children; Bonnie, Matt, Susie, John, Tom, and Tim.

Matt grew up in the Northern suburbs of Chicago, Illinois as the son of a Mechanic father and loving homemaker mother. Throughout his young life Matt enjoyed playing sports, drawing, camping, fishing, and listening to music. He also got into his fair share of mischief along the way. Whether he was telling a joke or making a funny face in photographs, Matt was always trying to make people laugh. Comedy was a strong personality trait that he displayed throughout his lifetime.

Matt joined the military in 1991 as a jet engine mechanic on the B-52 bombers and KC-135s. The military stationed him at Fairchild AFB where he fell in love with Spokane and everything it had to offer. It was here that he met Susan and had their only daughter Ashley. While living here in the PNW he hunted, fished, and loved to camp. Every summer for most of Ashley's childhood they would camp at Curlew Lake. Having lived in Spokane for 10 years the military decided it was time he moved. He received orders to RAF Lakenheath, England. Ashley only lived a couple hours away in Germany with Mom and step-dad. Ashley would spend the summers with Matt traveling across England visiting historic castles, battlegrounds, and monuments. They cherished sharing their love for food and history together during this time. Notable cities they visited were: London, Venice, and Rome. One of Matt's many hobbies was photography. He loved capturing every little moment of his and Ashley's adventures through life together. Being a great father was always his first priority no matter the distance between them.

In 2009 he again received orders to move; this time to Honolulu. This is where he fell in love with the Hawaiian culture and the beach lifestyle. Every summer Ashley flew out to visit him here, and with no surprise he would make each summer a memorable one. They would spend days on the beach soaking in the sun and boogie boarding. When they weren't on the beach, they would be playing Rockband or watching movies. Matt loved to share his love for video games and movies with Ashley. If there was one subject he knew well, it was cinema. While living in Hawaii Matt and Ashley adopted their loving little chihuahua-terrier, Kiki. Kiki was Matt's best companion through the years.

In 2011 Matt completed a distinguished 20 year career and retired from the United States Air Force with Honors. A short time later, Matt left Hawaii and moved back to his home state. Matt adjusted to civilian life and worked at the US Postal Service while living with his brother John and Family. Adjusting to civilian life took some getting used to.

Matt eventually moved back to Spokane in 2013 to live closer to Ashley. As he settled back into Spokane Matt picked up where he left off and began working at the United States Postal Service Plant adjacent to the Spokane Airport. The majority of the time he worked there he was processing mail. When Ashley started college at Eastern Washington University, Matt bought a house in order to be closer to her. He attended every Eastern volleyball game to support Ashley through her years playing. There wasn't a match that he missed. Matt beamed with Pride when he spoke to friends and Family about her accomplished career in Division one Volleyball.

Matt was an avid fan of sports and recreation. Ashley and he would attend the Spokane Indians and Spokane Chiefs games almost every year. Every June they continued to take their annual camping trips. They had decided to travel up to Conconully State Park; they camped here every summer for 5 years straight. One activity they enjoyed there was golf. The experience was less about the golf and more about enjoying each other's company and some cocktails.

In October 2018 Matt was diagnosed with Esophageal cancer. He underwent Chemo and Radiation to get rid of it. Understanding the odds, he underwent a surgery in January 2019. He did not let the disease define who he was or what he could do. He continued to work and enjoy the things he loved. Matt loved to paint, and he was very talented at it. Throughout the years he and Ashley would paint many different scenic pictures. Matt also loved to listen to music. He took Ashley to the Iration concert at the local Knitting Factory.

In December of 2019 Matt learned that his cancer returned and it was terminal. Once again, he did not let it get him down. He continued to live every day to the fullest. In February 2020 Matt and Ashley went back to Honolulu, HI. Knowing time was limited he wanted to visit his favorite place on earth. While in Oahu they had the opportunity to go on so many adventures. Matt was most excited about the doors-off helicopter ride over the island. They revisited many of the things they had done years previous when he lived there.

After they came back Matt had the opportunity to adopt a rescue pup from Texas. They picked up Coco on March 22, 2020. Not knowing that Covid would take up the rest of his time he looked forward to living with his new "Beautiful baby" Coco. When quarantine hit in April Ashley moved back in with Matt. With both of them not being able to work they found fun things to do around the house. They often sat in the backyard by the fire pit listening to reggae music with the dogs. Instead of going out to Sip and Paint, they now painted together at home. June came around and they went on their annual camping trip. Matt's brother John and his family came out to join the trip. In memory of Ashley and Matt's time together during her childhood they all went up to Curlew Lake one last time. They spent a week up there hiking around the local lakes and relaxing in nature.

It is extremely hard to sum up a person's life. In the best way possible here is Matt's life in summary. He was an extraordinary Dad. He did any and everything in his power to support Ashley and to be a large part of her life. He was a good friend and coworker to those that truly knew him. Everything he did he would give his all 100% of the time. Matt was a great son, brother, and uncle. He was always supportive and cared very much for his family. Not a single birthday would pass without a card or gift being sent with a phone call exchanged. He was truly one of the most thoughtful people to those around him. His career in the Air Force did not define who he was; it was a part of him but there was so much more. A lover of sports, the arts, the outdoors, and animals; Matt was an outstanding man.

He is survived by his daughter Ashley, his Mother Mary Louise, Father Harold, Siblings: Bonnie, Susie, John, Tom, and Tim; and his dogs Kiki and Coco.
