Obituary

Norma passed away with family by her side on March 2, 2023 at the age of 89. She was born on February 8, 1934 in Spokane, WA to Joseph and Dora Smestad. She attended Grant Elementary School and Lewis and Clark High School. After graduating, she was hired at General Electric Supply as a secretary. This is where she met John Schlosser and they were married on May 21, 1955.  John and Norma started a family right away and eventually had eight children.

Norma stayed home to raise the kids and was an amazing mom. She was easy going and did not "Sweat the small stuff" but was firm with her rules; no fighting, chores before play, and keep your room clean! We did pretty good with two of the three rules!

She looked after the family tirelessly and made it look effortless.  We learned to love by her example.

We were very fortunate to have grown up when all of the neighborhood kids got together to play outside all day until dinner was served, and again until you had to come in when it got dark.  Mom was happy about that so at least most of us were out of her hair for a while. Mom developed some great friendships with the neighbors and they all supported each other.  We remember mom spending many an afternoon with her good friend and next door neighbor Jean Lamberson, an Arkansas transplant, sipping wine, gossiping and laughing their heads off, when she got home she spoke with a southern accent the rest of the day!

Mom and dad were adamant that all their kids attend catholic school, and we are all proud graduates of Assumption Catholic School, Shadle Park High School and Gonzaga Prep. Mom eventually went back to work to contribute to the cost of our education. She worked for Old National Bank for many years and then teamed up with her sister-in-law Gerri Schlosser and began a house cleaning business. Mom and Gerri were in business for many years even after their husbands retired. Mom enjoyed reading, working out, and traveling with her daughters.

Mom and Dad loved to travel in their motorhome, especially to the Olympic Peninsula. In 1992, they decided to sell their home and move to Sequim, WA.  That was quite the adventure for them, clamming, crabbing, fishing, and hiking. They moved back to Spokane in 2007 when dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Mom took such great care of dad until he passed away in 2011.

Norma eventually moved in with her daughter Barb for four years and for one year with her daughter Theresa before choosing to move into Kimberly's Cottage Adult Family Home. Mom was the first resident that still drove her own car.  She loved to help the care givers with laundry, yard work, and general house cleaning until her dementia advanced.  Eventually, Her longtime friend, Jean Lamberson,  did not want to miss out on all the fun and she moved into Kim's Cottage. They continued spending time laughing and taking care of each other. She loved living at Kim's cottage and we want to thank the entire team for the loving care they provided to mom.

Norma is preceded in death by her parents, her husband John, sister Carolyn Massie, brother Loren and her daughter –in – law Elizabeth. She is survived by her children Brian (Lynne) Schlosser, Barb (Robert) Nelson, Steve (Phyllis) Schlosser, Greg Schlosser, Ann (Tod) Anderson, Theresa (Jere) Sullivan, Patty (Jeff) Roberts, and John (Mindy) Schlosser, 25 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren, brother-in-law Duward Massie, and many nieces and nephews.
