Obituary

Rebecca Clara Long was born in Balta, North Dakota to George E. & Johanna Kuntz on January 22, 1937.  She was one of 14 children, 7 sisters and 6 brothers, who lived on the family farm.  She attended high school in Orrin, North Dakota.  Living on the dairy farm, working and attending community functions in rural North Dakota she met her first husband Valentine Bachmeier at a church event, and were married in June 1955, after he returned from being in the Korean War for 3 years.  They had 3 children, Ken, Karen, and Valentine Jr.  Her husband Val died in a car accident in July 1957. She then moved close to her parents in Devils Lake, North Dakota.  She worked for the local bakery and J.C. Penny's.  She met Covertt Long in 1968 and later were married in 1970.  Covertt worked for the Williston, North Dakota police department as a Sargent on the police force.  He had 3 sons from his previous marriage, Carl, Steven, and Michael that were part of the union.  Covertt and Rebecca had two children from their marriage, Corey and Joann while living in Williston, North Dakota.  Covertt and Rebecca later relocated to Kent, Washington where Covertt was hired on with the WA State Patrol in 1990.  They relocated to Spokane, a year later.  He passed in 1999, while employed as a State Patrol officer at an early age of 63.  Rebecca was a beloved spouse and homemaker.  She was a devout Catholic and always looked forward to attending Mass and church functions.  She loved to sew dresses, skirts, and blouses, and worked for a fabric store in Spokane for several years.  She enjoyed family gatherings, and family reunions.  She always made sure that the church received Sunday offerings from her. This was very important to her, since she had prepared to become a nun at the age of 17, prior to marrying her first love Valentine.  She was a wonderful loving mother and grandmother, providing care for her family in difficult times with a positive outlook.  Her faith kept her strong, willful and determined that her family followed the Catholic faith.  She is survived by her 6 children, 16 grandchildren, 5 sisters and 3 brothers.  She will be dearly missed by all.  A Funeral Mass will be held at St. John Vianney, 503 N Walnut Spokane Valley, WA 99212 on Thursday, July 28, 2022 at 2:00pm.  Online memorials can be made at www.holycrossofspokane.org .
