Obituary

Richard Anthony Hagmann passed away peacefully on July 21, 2025, in Spokane, WA, with his wife Martha, and his niece Barb Kennedy by his side.

Richard was born on June 23rd 1923 in Los Angeles, CA to William and Mary (Pfister) Hagmann. Growing up during the Great Depression, Richard learned to be resourceful and find a second use for just about everything from bits of wire and string, to jars and bottles. In 1942, using his life savings and knowledge of mechanics, Richard became a founding member of the Civil Air Patrol. He was later drafted and served until
an honorable discharge in 1946. He was awarded the Medal of Good Conduct, the WW2 Victory Medal, the American Campaign Medal, and the Asiatic Campaign Medal. Later, in 2015 he was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal of Honor and a promotion from Corporal to Lieutenant Colonel for his service.

On July 25, 1970, Richard married the love of his life, Martha, and became step-father to her two sons, David and Thomas. Soon after, the family moved to Spokane, WA, and settled in the Pine River Park area. Richard took a job as a civilian employee in aircraft mechanics at Fairchild Air Force Base from which he retired in 1985. He was also a founding member of the Knights of Columbus at St. Joseph's Parish in Colbert, WA, where he remained very active in parish life for many years.

Richard enjoyed many activities. Gardening was one of them and he could often be found tending to his plants. He also enjoyed traveling with his wife, whether it was in their motor home, on a plane to visit family, or on one of their many cruises. He was always up for an adventure. Richard and Martha were also avid square dancers which is where they met many of their lifelong friends.

Some of Richard's hobbies included coin and stamp collecting. He also kept a meticulous lawn, teaching all of us about the importance of directional mowing. In his later years, he enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, watching re-runs of Lawrence Welk, and feeding "his" birds that would come to visit the patio.

Richard was a kind and caring man who was always willing to lend a helping hand or share his vast wealth of knowledge. He was a loving and caring husband, step- father, uncle, grandpa, and great-grandpa. He will be greatly missed by all of us.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, William and Mary. His siblings, Alfred, Leonard, Maria, Benjamin, and Walter, as well as his step-son, David. He is survived by his wife Martha, his step-son Thomas Hudson (Linda). Grandchildren, Alicia (Matt), Nicholas (Chyanne) and Collin (Jessica). Great-Grandchildren, Corbin (Daphne), Brendon, Kyra, Amber, and Theodore. As well as many nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass will be held on August 9, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph's Parish in Colbert, WA, followed by a committal ceremony at 3:00 p.m. at Holy Cross Cemetery.
