Obituary

Ross H. Mounsey entered peacefully into eternal rest on December 29, 2022, at his home in Spokane, surrounded by his loving family.  Ross was born the son of Dr. James W. and Elizabeth Crowley Mounsey on June 12, 1929, at Sacred Heart Hospital.  Ross attended St. Augustine Grade School and graduated from Gonzaga Prep in  1947.   He excelled in track and golf, and was an Eagle Scout. Ross graduated from Stanford University in 1951, was a member of the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity, and remained an active member of the Stanford Alumni Association.
Following graduation Ross enlisted in the United States Navy and graduated in 1952 from its Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island.  His first commission was as the Executive Officer on a subchaser based in San Diego, California.  As the Korean War continued, Ross was redeployed to Yokosuka, Japan, where he was head of security at the naval base where he was stationed.
After being honorably discharged from the Navy in 1955, Ross returned to Spokane. He reconnected with and married Patsy Ann Erwin, whom he first met in their Cannon Hill neighborhood. Within the first seven years of their marriage, Ross and Patsy welcomed 5 children.
Ross began his business career as a lumber broker working in Spokane with his brother, Jim Mounsey.  In those early years Ross made calls upon lumber mills located throughout the Western US and Canada.  Later, in the 1970's, Ross and other business partners purchased a lumber mill in Valley, Washington, which they successfully operated for a number of years before selling it.  Following the sale of the mill, Ross worked for Merrill Lynch as a commodities and options trader for a number of years.   Later in life he returned to the lumber business when he joined Ketcham Forest Products in Seattle.
Ross had a deep love for classical music, which he began playing on the piano as a young boy.   He also loved jazz, and over the years he attended many live jazz performances, symphonies, and musicals.
Ross was also a sports fanatic. Besides golf, which he played most of his life, he logged thousands of miles as a runner and later a walker.
Beyond all, Ross was a loving family man and a man of integrity, whose profound faith served as the moral compass by which he directed his daily life.   He was devoted to his wife of nearly 67 years, Patsy Mounsey (nee Erwin), his children, their spouses, grandchildren, and the Catholic Church.  Ross was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Jim, and his sister, Sally.  He is survived by Patsy; his sons Blake, Pete (Anne), Tom (Jill), and Nick (Kim), and daughter, Lynn; and his grandchildren: Alexis (Chris), Lou, Katy, Molly, Gracey, Peter, and Mary Sarah.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Ross will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 28, 2023, at Spokane's St. Augustine Catholic Church, reception and celebration of Ross's life to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Providence Hospital Foundation (request direction to Dr. James W. Mounsey Sim Lab), or to the Catholic Foundation of Eastern Washington.
