Steven Jay
Lawler
August 17, 1948 – October 31, 2024
Steven Jay Lawler passed away on Oct 31st, 2024, at age 76. He was surrounded by family and passed doing what he loved best, napping! Steve was a man of sharp wit, laughter inducing sarcasm, and dedicated love.
Steve was born on Aug 17, 1948, in Glendale, California. He was the oldest son of Victor and Wilma Lawler and spent his childhood with his parents and three younger siblings, Denny, Bob and Sue, in the San Fernando Valley of California. After graduating from Loyola Marymount University where he met Mary Pat, he began his teaching career. Steve, Mary Pat, and their daughter, Colleen, moved to Spokane in 1977.
Steve taught at West Valley High School for 35 years in the English Department and coached football and basketball throughout most of his career. He provided a welcoming haven in his classroom for any student in need of it. He was an active member of the Spokane Racing Pigeon Club. Steve also held the position of President of the American Racing Pigeon Union as well as serving in other roles at the national level for over 20 years. Steve raised and raced homing pigeons all his adult life. When he wasn't racing pigeons or working at West Valley, Steve could be found with his family. He could often be found sitting quietly amidst the chaotic but joyful brood he helped create. Steve enjoyed good beer, good food, and good conversation. He was an avid sports fan and always kept the family updated on the upcoming games.
Steve's parents and sister proceeded him death. He is survived by his wife, Mary Pat, of 51 years, and his four children: Colleen Martinez, Brian Lawler, Megan Martin and Stephanie Kowis. Steve is also survived by his six grandchildren, Mya, Aaron, Corbin, Mason, Hadley and Fletcher.
Steve's Funeral Mass will be celebrated on November 23, at 11:00 AM followed by a reception at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 4521 N Arden Rd, Otis Orchards, WA. His online memorial page can be found at www.holycrossofspokane.org
