Steven
Redmond
February 23, 1968 – December 31, 2022
On 12/31/22 the world lost an amazing soul. Steven was born in Spokane Washington, to Paul and
Barbara Redmond, the youngest of 3 and the only son. He was fearless, accident prone and a frequent
visitor to the emergency department at Holy Family Hospital. Many family stories start with "when
Steve was…we were at Holy Family again".
Steven loved sports and hated school. He found his calling in law enforcement and suddenly, school
wasn't so bad. He graduated from Eastern Washington University in 1991 with a degree in Criminal
Justice. He worked (volunteered) as a reserve officer for Spokane Police and at one fateful roll call, he
enthusiastically agreed to a "hand me down" blind date (the intended suitor was dating another). This
fateful encounter led to 31 years of love, laughter, tears, apologies (in both directions), one regrettable
flying potato, many work related orthopedic injuries and two outstanding baby boys who have grown
into the most amazing young men.
Steven dedicated his 30+ year career in law enforcement to the City of Seattle. He started on a foot
beat on Capital Hill and transitioned to East precinct 3rd watch patrol with his first partner, Jack Lone.
Steve and Jack were two peas in a pod and shenanigans were a plenty with the pair. His career took him
to the bicycle unit where he gained a spectacular physique and invented patented handlebar mitts to
protect officers' hands in winter (which is from October to April in Seattle). Steven moved to the traffic
unit after Lucas was born and served in traffic cars, DUI squad, and ultimately his true happiness, the
motor squad. It's a long story but suffice it to say, he was right, the motorcycle unit was his happy place.
During the last years of his life, Steven struggled with PTSD, he was the strongest and most determined
man anyone would ever meet. He fought for healing for himself and family but most of all, he fought for
healing for every first responder. He founded Code 4 NW in 2012 and went full steam ahead (as
Redmond's do) helping others who suffered with the wounds of their lives. He gave to others
everything he could and more: his ear, his time, his compassion and understanding of their pain. He was
kind and tough and had an unending desire to help. He spoke widely in Washington and many states
across the country on addiction and PTSD. He helped officers and their families in countless numbers get
the help they needed. Steven remembered their stories and pain, making him even more determined to
shift the fear of admitting our challenges and creating a community of healing.
Steven was set to retire from SPD when he was unable to fight his pain any longer. He leaves behind his
wife of 29 years Deanna (Burdick), who will love him and will always see his beautiful, imperfect and
electric true self. His two sons, Lucas and Aiden, who together share many of Steven's best qualities.
His father Paul, sister Kathleen (Gary) who loved him unconditionally. Deanna's brother Glenn and wife
Kellie Burdick, who have given so much love, prayer and physical support to both Deanna and Steve.
Deanna's sisters Teresa June (Jeff) and Laurie Corder (Dan) who loved Steven and many nieces and
nephews, both Burdick and Redmond.
Steven has joined his sister Christine, mother Barbara and Deanna's parents Dick and LaVonne Burdick,
and nephew Blane in the loving embrace of Jesus Christ. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation
made in his honor to: keepnsafe.com, Code4NW, or any not for profit benefiting Police, Fire, Corrections
or nurses for addiction and mental health care.
