Theresa "Terri"
Monaghan Mckenzie
July 12, 1950 – November 25, 2022
On Friday, November 25, 2022, Theresa Monaghan McKenzie passed away at the age of 72. She was a dedicated wife, caring mother, loving grandmother, and stalwart friend. She loved reading and traveling, especially with her husband and her friends. She valued education and encouraged her children to find their passions. She was preceded in death by her parents Ed and Mary Monaghan, her brother Michael Monaghan, and her sisters Patricia Monaghan and Eileen Monaghan.
Terri was born in New York and moved around as a child of a military father. Her family settled in Anchorage, Alaska, where she graduated from high school and went to Seattle University for college. There she studied journalism and met Don McKenzie. They dated for a few years and were married in 1970, surrounded by family and friends. They lived in Spokane, Washington, for a few years where they welcomed their first child, Sean. They moved to Anchorage and added Heather and Jennifer to the family. They returned to Spokane where they put down roots and welcomed Colin and Kevin. She was a pastoral associate for St. Peter's Catholic Church in Spokane for 15 years where she shared her love of music and scripture. She ran the catechism classes, vacation bible school and so much more. After St. Peter's Terri began working at Gonzaga University in the Religious Studies Department with the Credo-Focus Program. In her time there she worked with clergy from around the world who were on sabbatical. While at Gonzaga she earned her Doctorate in Leadership and moved to Spokane Community College as the Vice President of Student Services; she worked at SCC for 13 years. Upon her retirement, she continued teaching as an adjunct professor at Gonzaga, teaching Christian Leadership courses until 2019. She was very active in her community of faith, Saint Claire, where she was ordained in 2019. During her retirement she also spent lots of time with her grandchildren, spoiling them as only a grandmother can.
The impact of her life can hardly be summed up in any number of words, though she would have enjoyed the challenge. She was a dedicated friend, a masterful preacher, and a fierce ally, and her loss will be felt for many years.
She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Donald McKenzie, her children; Sean (Michelle) McKenzie, Heather (Joshua) McKenzie WaitE, Jennifer (Lloyd) Goodin, Colin McKenzie, Kevin (Charlotte Binkoski) McKenzie, her grandchildren; Brian McKenzie, Evan McKenzie, Rosella McKenzie, Brandi WaitE, Shelby WaitE, Lucienne McKenzie WaitE, Emerson McKenzie WaitE, Michaela Goodin, Liam Goodin, her siblings Peggy Monaghan, Kathy (Hermon Joyner) Monaghan, Tim Monaghan, and many cherished nieces, nephews, great nieces and great-nephews.
The memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 18th at 11 am at the Spokane Community College Lair Building in the Auditorium with a reception following in the Big Foot rooms, a wake will be held Sunday evening at her favorite Irish Pub- O'Doherty's Irish Grill from 7 pm until 9 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family asks those who are able instead to donate to either:
