Thomas Willliam
Martin
February 16, 1932 – January 24, 2023
Thomas William Martin, age 90, passed away peacefully on January 24, 2023, with his family by his side. Tom was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 64 years, Lois Ann in 2019, and his daughter Mary Jill in 1961.
Tom was born on February 16, 1932, in Harrisburg PA. After an unstable childhood, he settled in upstate New York and graduated from Saranac Lake High School in 1950. Tom was an outstanding three sport athlete, who was inducted into the school's Hall of Fame in 1998. Upon graduation, Tom and his cousin joined the US Marine Corp in 1951. Tom served in Korea in 1952 and was honorably discharged in 1954. Tom aspired to be a mining engineer and left Pennsylvania for a trip out west to visit mining schools. As the story is told, he got off the train in Butte, Montana to visit the School of Mines, stopped at a bar for a drink and never made it back on the train. He enrolled at the college in 1954. He was a four-year starter on the football team and was involved in many drama club presentations. He met the love of his life, Lois and they were married on December 10, 1955. While in Butte, they were blessed with their daughters Jill and Meg. They moved to Deer Lodge, MT in 1961 and had their third child Tom. Tom and Lois settled in Spokane, WA in 1965 where son Tim was born. Tom and Lois called north Spokane home for the next 50 years. Tom worked for the US Bureau of Mines from 1970 until his retirement in 1996. With Lois by his side, their lives were filled with travel and proudly watching the endeavors of their seven grandchildren. All of them hold much love and treasured memories of their Pa.
Tom's early passion for athletics stayed with him throughout his life. He enjoyed playing basketball, snow skiing, and especially golf with his trusted oversized putter. He was an avid runner, participating in Bloomsday 26 times from 1982 until 2008. Tom was also known for his attention to detail, especially when working around the house. His children called on him often to assist with home projects of their own. Tom not only gave expert guidance and advice but was also a willing and invaluable participant.
Tom loved to converse with people. He listened patiently and without judgement. He was always available to guide us through our problems with sound advice or perspective and often made us laugh with his sense of humor. Tom was a uniquely independent man who worked tirelessly throughout his life to become a successful engineer, husband, father and grandfather.
Tom is survived by his three children Meg (Steve), Tom (Ann) and Tim (Mary), his seven grandchildren Dan (Lindsey), Molly (Bobby), Tara (Johnny), Claire, Jack, Matthew, Michael and his five great grandchildren Conor, Josie, Emma, Cate, Jackson and Phebe.
