Obituary

Valentine Anton Himelspach passed away peacefully in his home in Spokane, Washington on April 18, 2024. Val was born on September 13th, 1928, to Christian and Katherine (Olheiser) Himelspach. He was raised and educated in Glen Ullin, North Dakota, the youngest of seven children. As a young man he was drafted into the Army National Guard, and spent two years at Camp Rucker, Alabama. He was honorably discharged in 1952.

Val returned home to the family farm and to marry the love of his life, Florence Glasser. Val and Florence moved to Coalwood, Montana where Lynnette, their first daughter, was born.

In 1956, after moving to Spokane, their family was blessed with seven more children. Val and Florence would then raise their eight children in what would become their forever home. Val retired from the Safeway warehouse in 1995 after 25 years of loyal work. He spent the next 30 years pursuing passions in woodworking, gardening, and spending time with his eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Val showed his love for his family by always being there to support them; he attended every preschool graduation, dance recital, and school sporting event until his health made traveling difficult.

Val was known for his strong work ethic, love of sports, and fierce skills at the cribbage board. He set the standard for what it meant to be a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Family and friends were always welcome at the Himelspach home of 64 years; holidays were well-attended and exceptionally vibrant, lovingly referred to as "organized chaos." Val also had a special connection to his nieces and nephews, always remembering their birthdays with a phone call.

While Val is irreplaceable, his memory lives on with his wife of 69 years, Florence, children Lynnette (Gary) Hassler, Valerie (Greg) Hills, Dale Himelspach, Scott (Brenda) Himelspach, Renee Himelspach, Lisa (Jeff) Clizer, Stacie (Lindsey) Fry, and Pat (Christine) Himelspach. He is preceded in death by his parents, siblings, and son-in-law Lindsey Fry.
