Obituary

Bill lived a rich and full life. His family moved to San Bernardino at age 5, Tucson at 9, and finally to Scottsdale at age 16, where he graduated from Scottsdale High School.

Bill was an incredibly hard worker, starting as a bagger at Safeway at age 16 and rising to assistant manager as an ASU student. Bill enjoyed his friends, and on one outing met the love of his life, Carol Ann Donaldson, at the Red Dog Saloon in old Scottsdale. From the moment they met, their lives fused, and in November 1969, shortly after Bill earned his BA in Political Science from ASU, they married.

Bill joined the US Army as a 2nd Lieutenant in January 1970-1974; three of those years stationed in Germany. Bill and Carol made the most of this time, traveled widely, and developed a love for German food, beer and BMW's. Their first son was born in Nurnberg, Germany. In 1974 they returned to Phoenix and Bill continued with Safeway, transferred to Lake Havasu City as a store manager, then back to Phoenix. While working full time Bill returned to ASU and earned a BS in Accounting in 1982. He passed his CPA exam on the first try and at age 35 with a wife and two children, embarked on a new career that suited him well. Four years later, their youngest son was born.

In 2007, after launching all the kids, Bill and Carol moved to Spokane and enjoyed all that the Northwest offers, and as often as possible they travelled to see their growing family and explore Europe.

Bill was devoted to his family and spent countless hours coaching his sons' sport teams, leading their Boy Scout troops, and supporting their interests. Always a stand-up guy, and a real Boy Scout (Actually an Eagle Scout).

Bill showed up for those he loved as he knew that being present for big and small events mattered. Bill never shrunk from adventure, and as a young man, would go cliff diving with friends at Arizona lakes, waterskied the Scottsdale canals towed by a friends pick-up truck, and frequently skied black diamonds on the slopes. He loved the outdoors, golfing, camping, hiking, fly fishing and skiing (both water and snow). An avid reader, he devoured every new book by his favorite authors, especially studying military history. With a mind like a steel trap, he absorbed and retained facts about anything of interest. His sense of focus is legend in the family. Bill loved his Irish heritage, participating in the Phoenix Irish Foundation as an officer, enjoying Irish music, cultivating many Irish friends both here and in Ireland. He also was a fierce ASU Sun Devil football fan and founder of Spokane's ASU Alumni chapter. Bill gave much of his time to St. Al's, civic organizations, and several local charities, making a positive difference everywhere he lived.
