Winnifred Shirley
Carroll
September 20, 1929 – October 26, 2023
Known to all as "Shooshe" started her life in Philipsburg, Montana born to Francis Xavier Winninghoff and Dorothy (Grace) Winninghoff. The Winninghoff's are well known in the community of Philipsburg: her father and grandfather were the town blacksmiths and along with her father and uncles it later became Winninghoff Motors. Her family also owned the soda fountain where she worked alongside her uncles making milk shakes and selling homemade fudge. Shooshe learned to hunt and fish from her dad, grandpa, and uncles. She was the middle of 3 lovely sisters and many cousins. Obtaining her BS in Nursing from Carroll College in Helena, Montana and began working as an RN in Butte, Montana where she met her future husband William K Carroll a WWII veteran, whilst caring for his dying mother. His mother said to him "You better marry that girl!" They did and they built their first home in Butte. It is here where their beautiful big family began to grow. They moved to Spokane, WA in 1958 and Shooshe had a wonderful fulfilling 37 year career at Sacred Heart (Providence) Hospital. She belonged to Saint Ann's Auxiliary doing fund raisers and caring for terminally ill children. She went back to school at Gonzaga University and became a Nurse Anesthetist. Together they raised eight children and lots of grandchildren and great grandchildren. All 10 of us would camp in a tent at Indian Creek State Park (Priest Lake). She and Bill built their second home together along with the children at Priest Lake in 1967. She would race around the lake in a ski boat, fishing, and huckleberry picking in the mountains for years. She taught us to water ski and snow ski. They then built their third home in Spokane on acreage and got to spend years doing the true passion of her life riding horses out on the trails of Washington, Idaho, Oregon and Montana! She belonged to the Back Country Horse Club and Appaloosa Horse Club where she rode the trail ride (with 200 other riders and horses, and sometimes her daughters or grandchildren would join in) called "The Chief Joseph trail ride" 100 miles every summer.
She is preceded in death by her husband William K Carroll, Her two oldest boys Billy and Cary, grandson Logan Allen, and her sister Sr. Mary Marcella Winninghoff. Survived by her sister Kay Miller, her children Lori (Greg) Marquina, Lisa (Donald) Allen, Janet Carroll, Judy (Don) Holbert, Marcy (Tom) Mongan and Kelly (Jody) Carroll. Many grandchildren and great grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews, many dear friends.
We would like to thank her cousin Father Mike Poole, Avamere assisted living and Hospice of Spokane and especially Beth, Hannah and Ellen for the superb care she was lovingly given. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to: River's Wish Animal Sanctuary https://www.riverswishanimalsanctuary.
God Bless Shooshe!
